They moved from their shabby but pleasant little apartment to a tiny.
Grim room under the eaves in an ancient boarding house.

＊grim：原是指“冷酷的、殘忍的、可怕的、討厭的、堅強的”的意思，
              這裡則是相對於前面 pleasant 來說，讓人覺得沉悶／鬱悶的房間。

＊under the eaves：則是指房子在設計後所遺留下來的小空間，
                                 通常是留給僕人用的，位在較不能保暖或是抗熱的空間。

 

page 8: "Mon Dieu! What are you suggesting?" There are aspects to
             Traville's character that you may not be aware of" 
             "Are you implying"...?

＊There are aspects to Traville's character 是指Traville的個性有很多面。 

It's a run-down, shabby district of modest apartments.

＊run-down：荒廢的, 失修的, 坍塌的
＊modest：是講那間小公寓還不錯，雖然不是豪宅，但適合一般居住。
